Jamaicans in South Africa

There was much talk of going back to Africa, becasue that is where most of the black slaves orginated, but how many jamaicans actually accomplished this, or would want to accomplish this?

After Buju Banton switched his religion to Rastafarianism it was thought he would relocate, but he only visited, inspite of his song. till I'm laid to rest.

Although it has been established that wearing a mask will not prevent a person from getting the virus, nevertheless people are just not sure how to prepare.

Jamaican Prayers

Don't know if these prayers are totally Jamaican, but I said them when I was growing up. Especially as the nation loses sight of God can you please share any that you can remember from childhood. Please share them below.

Prayer 1 - said just before a meal.

God is good
God is great
Let us thank him
For our food
Amen

Prayer 2 -said just before a meal as well

For health, for strength
For daily food
we praise thy name
O Lord Amen

Prayer 3 -  said before bed

Gentle Jesus meek and Mild
Look upon a little child
pity my simplicity
Suffer me to come to thee
Amen

Prayer 4  -  said before bed

Pray mama
Pray Papa
Pray to God
To Make me a good little boy/girl
In Jesus Name Amen

Prayer 5 - said before bed

Now I lay me down sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep

Watch over me through the night

And bring me safe to morning light.

Jamaicans in Greenland

I have always had an admiration for this plot of land. Although it is almost as large as South America, if not bigger; and yet it is not reckoned a continent, but an Island, the largest, but still.

I wonder who it is that determines what landmass is deemed a continent, and what is deemed an island.

It would be very interesting if there were Jamaicans in Greenland. This place is known for the cold, and Jamaica for the heat. If you live in Greenland and you were originally born in Jamaica, share your story. How or why did you leave Jamaica to go to Greenland.

Jamaican Anaconda

So the anaconda was smuggled into Florida from Africa as a small snake, but then the snake became too big for the owner and was released into the everglades. Now it is a big problem in the everglades. It eats everything, and nothing eats it.

Are these snakes in Jamaica? Send me pictures of snakes that you have seen on the island.

According to Wiki, the snake found in Jamaica is called the Boa snake. It is very similar to the anaconda in that it is non-venomous. Apart from the zoo has any ever seen a real one live. Share your stories.

Some people pet snakes, will that ever be a thing in Jamaica?

Jamaican Dawg

Initially I wanted to tell a story about Bredda Dawg and Anansi, but I saw a dog this morning similar to the one above, and I just had to comment.

I was coming in this morning to work and I happened to see a dog on the street, it looked so malnourished that for a moment I was translated back to Jamaica where this is a common sight. To see a scrawny dog, with its total rib cage showing is nothing new in Jamaica, but in the US, the owner of this dog, once found will be charged with animal cruelty.

For this reason I really hope that the owner is never found, and the dog is euthanized.

Don't the animal shelters become overcrowded eventually with all these stray animals, that their owners have abandoned or neglected? I hope these animals are euthanized, what are your thoughts?

They are not much protection either. Note what this dog does with this stuffed animal.

Jamaica No problem mon

I don't think this blog would truly be Jamaican without the infamous Jamaica slang? I don't know who coined the slang or when it was coined, however I do know the shirts that it used to be printed on.

The slang was simply "Jamaica no problem"..I guess in an attempt to mimic the Caribbean accent the "mon" was added, and I am not sure if this is an insult to our accent.  The Caribbean folks I know don't say "mon" they say "man". What are your thoughts?

There is one image of a girl in  a wet t-shirt that I think said Jamaica no problem, but I'm not sure this is what gave the slang popularity.

Anyways I do support the sentiment, with the exception that you have to have money to live in the island and be o.k.

I think Tony Rebel's song says it best.

Jamaican Money

Those who remember the good old days will tell you that there was a time when the Jamaican dollar was more than the US dollar. Here is a video about Jamaican Money let me know what you think?

As a child I remember the largest denomination being a $20 bill. Then as the value of the dollar began to erode, there was the need for the $100 bill, then the $500 bill and now I here there is even the $1000 bill and there is talk about the $5000 bill. Geesh what can be done about the eroding value of our dollar?

Jamaican Zoo

I remember as a child there was hope zoo, located on Hope Road in St Andrew. There was a lion and some snakes there. I think these might have the easiest to maintain and consequently were the main attractions for the zoo.

Bur as the story goes, this too was closed down. Maybe for the lack of funding. Does anyone know why the Zoo closed down, and if there is any word on its restoration?

Jamaican hand games

As a child I was fascinated by the girls playing hand games, and I always wanted to participate, but never knew the lyrics or what to do.

Here is video that I found that has a few of them mentioned.

I took it serious I went to girl friend of mine and asked her to teach me back hand. Till this day, that is the only one I can do, so hats off to these girls for knowing the lyrics and moves to all these games.
